The part nobody teaches
The problem isn't forgetting.
Search your phone for that text about your car. With 200 messages, you find it. With 40,000, you get a wall of results and the one you want is somewhere on page six.
Your phone isn't broken. Search did its job. You just have more stuff now, so “close enough” got worse. And nothing warned you — it happened a little at a time.
AI memory has the same problem, and almost nobody builds the fix. Your own head already does: you drop what you don't use. That's not a flaw. It's the reason you can find anything in there at all.
What happens every night
Five steps, and the order matters. Swap any two and the whole thing still looks fine while it slowly ruins itself. Your brain runs all five too — we named ours after the biology.
